Donald Trump has vowed to make America greater than ever before in an address to cheering supporters on the eve of his inauguration as president. Tens of thousands of supporters and protesters came to Washington ahead of Friday's swearing in ceremony. Demonstrations are planned for Mr Trump's first day in office, highlighting the polarisation of the US electorate as he becomes the country's 45th president.
China's gross domestic product, the world's second largest, grew 6.7% in 2016. It was the slowest full year of growth figures since 1990, but was comfortably within the government's target range. Policymakers in Beijing are now bracing for challenges amid fears of a possible trade war with the US under a Trump presidency.
And Mexico has extradited Joaquin El Chapo Guzman, the country's most powerful drug lord, to face trial in the US. Mr. Guzman was at one time credited with smuggling half of all the illicit drugs entering the US. He twice escaped from the maximum security gaols in Mexico.
