Pope Benedict abdicates

Benedict XVI officially resigned as pope on Thursday, leaving the Vatican for Castel Gandolfo, a papal residence outside Rome. The abdication took effect at 8pm Italian time and was symbolised by the closing of the gates at the palace at Castel Gandolfo.
