Gotthard Tunnel: In the EU's vital artery

The 17km-long Gotthard Tunnel binds Switzerland with the economies of the EU. A rail section will open in June and a referendum on whether to build another road tunnel is planned for the end of this month. But development is proving controversial. The FT's Ralph Atkins finds out why.
