Aug 22: India's farmer suicide capital

Rising cultivation costs and crippling debts have forced more than 90,000 people in India to commit suicide since 2001. The FT's Joe Leahy talks to Kalawati Bandurkar, whose husband committed suicide in 2005, leaving her to fend for nine children. Ms Kalawati has become a political symbol of the farmers' struggle since Rahul Gandhi, of the Nehru-Gandhi political clan, visited her village in July and raised her plight in parliament.
